How to Handle Stress
Like a Pro

We all know what stress feels like, but how do we actually learn to handle stress? Some of us may react physically to stress – you may notice when you are stressed, you feel a tightening of your neck muscles. Others may notice behavioral reactions to stress – perhaps by becoming socially withdrawn. No matter how you react, the point is to keep in mind that everyone will experience stress. More importantly, though, recognize that you can learn how to lead a less stressful life. Our 4 tips on how to handle stress like a pro:

 

  • Laugh often
  • Exercise
  • “No.”
  • Write it out!

 

4 Ways to Handle Stress

  1. Laugh often. Many of us underestimate the power of laughter. Think about the last time you laughed so hard that you were on the verge of tears. It’s pretty tough to think of life’s stresses when you are genuinely laughing! Laughter is shown to release endorphins, the feel-good chemicals we have. The more you laugh, the less stressed you become, and the more you laugh, the better you’ll be at handling stress!
     
  2. Exercise. You may be thinking, “Why would I put stress on my body when I’m already stressed?” The answer is simple: exercise will help to lower your stress hormones! It’s also going to release endorphins, the same way laughter does as mentioned above. Give yoga a try! Not only is this great for you physically, but the practice of yoga is incredibly relaxing. The goal of yoga is to work your mind and your body together. No matter what exercise you choose, just know that any exercise will be helpful in your goal to handle stress like a pro.
     
  3. Learn how to say no. A common source of stress is feeling overwhelmed by the tasks ahead of you. Whether it’s taking too much on at work, or saying yes to hosting the next social gathering, sometimes it can just be too much. When you learn to say no, you will take control of more aspects of your life. The more you feel in control, the easier it will be to control stress levels.
     
  4. Write it out! Journaling your thoughts can be therapeutic. Set aside a time when you are feeling stressed to throw all of your thoughts onto the page in front of you. When you are journaling, write down every good thing that is going on in your life. Doing so will help you focus on the positives and less on the stresses.
