3 Reasons Not to Avoid the Cold Weather

Did you know that Finland is the happiest country in the world in 2019, even though it has long, cold winters? Many people complain about winter and talk about the winter slump they feel, but it doesn’t have to be that way if you learn how to embrace winter. Here are just three great reasons you shouldn’t avoid the cold weather this winter.

Reason #1 – Burn More Calories
Have you been wanting to shed a few extra pounds? Winter might help! People often associate winter with weight gain, but weight gain often occurs because we stay indoors and chow down on comfort foods. Get outside in the cold and your body has to work harder to keep your core temperature up. When you’re outdoors, your body will burn a lot of calories to humidify the air you’re breathing and to keep you warm, so you might want to take your workout outdoors this winter to ramp up your calorie burn.

Reason #2 – Improved Sleep
When you’re trying to sleep, your body’s core temperature drops naturally. During the summer, this can take a couple of hours, but during the winter it drops faster. You’ll also be able to sleep in later when you want to because of the shorter days and darker mornings.

Reason #3 – Cooler Temperatures Boost Brain Power
Did you know that the cold weather that comes with winter can actually help your brain? Your brain thinks more clearly at cooler temperatures. In fact, studies show that people perform tasks better in cooler rooms than in warmer rooms. Other research shows that individuals are far more likely to tackle cognitive problems in the winter than in the summer. Use the cold weather to your advantage this winter. If you need some ideas for a project or some confidence and clarity before a presentation, head outdoors for a nice walk to get your brain going.

Don’t let the winter doldrums get you down this year. Instead of dreading the cold and avoiding it, embrace it. It’s great for your body and your brain.
