Wake Up Happy

5 Ways to Wake Up Happy

It’s officially August, the days are getting shorter, and the days of summer will soon be turning cooler. There’s already a little less daylight, which means you might be finding it harder to wake up in the morning.

Waking up happy sets the tone for your whole day, but what if you have a tough time getting up feeling relaxed and happy? The good news – you can change your mornings. Here are five simple things you can do to start waking up happier in the mornings, which will get you motivated for the rest of your day.

1 – Don’t Use Snooze
Tempted to hit snooze? Don’t do it! It can ruin your whole day. Your brain knows that alarm is going off again soon, so you won’t get into a deep sleep, making you feel more tired. If you want to wake up happy, set your alarm, and get up the first time it goes off. You’ll feel more refreshed.

2 – Begin and End Your Day with Gratitude
Begin and end your day by thinking about things you’re grateful for. Negativity can ruin your sleep and your whole day. Right before you go to sleep, list a couple of things you’re thankful for, and do the same thing when you wake up. Gratitude changes the way your brain works and can even boost brain health.

3 – Turn Your Face to the Sun
Sunshine will make you feel instantly more awake, so step out on your porch with your coffee or spend some time reading by a sunny window. Daylight stimulates the body to stop making melatonin, the hormone that makes you feel sleepy. The sun also increases serotonin levels in the brain, boosting your mood and making you feel happier.

4 – Turn Up the Music
Music can boost your mood, and when you turn on those favorite tunes, you’ll definitely find that morning groove. There’s a good chance you’ll want to dance, too, so you’ll get the blood flowing while burning a few calories.

5 – Stretch Your Body
Stretching gets the blood flowing as well, and it’ll not only boost your mood in the morning, it can help you through your day by increasing endurance, range of motion, and flexibility.

Even if you’re not a morning person, it’s possible to start your day happy. Try out these tips over the next week and let us know how they make you feel. And check back next week, we’ll be back with at some great tips for aging gracefully.
