How to Get into a Routine After Summer

Last week we debunked some of the most common myths surrounding the brain and brain health. This week, as summer draws to an end, we’re going to give you some practical tips on how to get back into a routine after the warm, lazy vacation season comes to a close.

We’ve put together a few easy tips you can follow to make it easier to get that routine going as we leave the days of summer behind.

Tip #1 –
Start with a Bedtime and Waking Schedule – When you’re trying to establish a routine once again, get started by setting a regular bedtime and wake time. If you’ve been sleeping in regularly and staying up late, start slowly moving your bedtime and wake times earlier until you reach the sweet spot, ensuring you get those 7-8 hours of sleep at night.

Tip #2 –
Get Your Body Moving – Did you let your fitness fall by the wayside? It’s time to get moving again. Even if you start with a walk each day, move a little bit. It boosts brain health, improves overall health, and will make it easier to feel energized as you get back into a daily routine.

Tip #3 –
Plan Ahead with a Schedule Each Week – At the beginning of your week, come up with a schedule. This way, you know what’s going on in the coming week. Note obligations, appointments, and set some time for free time, too. Try to keep your schedule simple in the first week or two as you get back on track.

Tip #4 –
Don’t Forget to Take Time to Relax – Be sure you’re setting aside some time to relax. If you’re too stressed, you’ll find it harder to stick with the routine. Even if things get a little off schedule, stay relaxed, be flexible, and work to get back on track.

Just remember, your new routine isn’t set in stone. Try it out. See how it goes. If it’s not working, change it up until you find a routine that works well for your life. Make adjustments as needed.
