What is Prevagen?
Prevagen (Pronounced: prev-uh-gen) is a new brain health supplement and functions unlike other brain or memory supplements. Prevagen’s active ingredient is a new use for a well-known calcium-binding protein called “apoaequorin” which is found in a certain species of jellyfish.
Prevagen® binds to calcium in cells and helps reduce damage to cells that occurs in aging due to our body’s decline in production of calcium-binding proteins.* Calcium serves a vital function of cellular communication but excess calcium can disrupt the balance and damage cells. Prevagen® helps to restore balance and improve memory problems that occur in aging.*
What are the most commonly reported benefits of Prevagen?
Research conducted by scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee demonstrated the main effect of “apoaequorin” (the active ingredient in Prevagen®) is brain cell protection through regulation of calcium in the cell.
In a large randomized, placebo-controlled trial of adults over 40, Prevagen improved learning, short-term memory, and word recall over 90 days.
How long will it take to feel results?
Many have reported benefits within the first week but results will vary. Daily use for 30-90 days is a reasonable length of time to experience results.
Do you have research supporting Prevagen?
Yes. Quincy Bioscience has research laboratories at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In our foundational trials, apoaequorin demonstrated over 50% brain cell protection versus the control group. A recent memory study showed Prevagen significantly improved cognitive function compared to placebo. The findings of this research were presented to the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference.
Are there any side effects with Prevagen?
Prevagen has been independently tested and shown to be non-toxic and well tolerated.
Can I take Prevagen with my current mediation(s)?
While Prevagen has no know interactions it is always safe to talk with your doctor before beginning a new course of supplementation.
How is Prevagen related to the calcium supplement I am currently taking?
Calcium supplements are intended to support bone, hair and dental health. Prevagen helps to manage the calcium ions in your nervous system.
I haven’t heard of ‘apoaequorin’ before?
Researchers who study calcium sure have! Apoaequorin (Pronounced: ā-poe-ē-kwôr-ĭn) was discovered in the early 1960’s as researchers wondered why a certain species of jellyfish glowed in the Puget Sound (Washington state). They discovered that when the protein apoaequorin, contained in the jellyfish, bound to calcium, a light was emitted. Today, because of apoaequorin’s long-history and safety, it is the preferred research tool as a calcium indicator. Don’t worry though, glowing is not a side-effect with Prevagen!
Is Prevagen available in stores?
Prevagen is widely available at Walgreens and Rite Aid stores as well as local health food stores across America.
What is the role of jellyfish in Prevagen?
The active ingredient in Prevagen® is “apoaequorin” which is a “calcium-binding protein” contained in a specific species of jellyfish which also use apoaequorin to regulate calcium. The structure of these proteins is remarkably similar to the calcium-binding proteins our bodies produce and has proven to be a suitable replacement for the diminishing supply of these necessary protective proteins lost in the aging process.
